Ghost Man

Anybody: What are you going to be for Halloween this year?

Kiddo: I’m going to be my very own superhero, one that I made up… Ghost Man. I have a cape and a utility belt, and my superpower is that I can turn invisible so that the bad guys can’t get me.

What he forgets to tell people is that he also has his very own superhero team. The members include the Man and myself plus most of his aunts and uncles. He’s named us the Naturals and the way he sees it if anything bad happens or he needs help figuring something out all he has to do is call one of us and we’ll help him solve his problem.

His back story to go with his costume character made this years Halloween so much fun. I love that it was unique to him and that he was the ONLY ghost man walking around.

(He said this was his favorite, he loves walking house to house. He was so funny, as soon as he said thank you and turned around he’d run back to us shouting “I got another TREAT!! Lets go to the next house!”

(Mean as we are we made him wait till he got home to go through his candy. We were nice enough to let him pick one piece to eat before bed though. He picked the sweet tarts.

I loved this Halloween. The weather was great and he was happy the entire time. I think for him it ranks as one of the best days ever this year. I can’t wait until next year, I really get a kick out of making his costume and I love watching his joy in the holiday.

oooo pumpkin!

In preparation for Halloween last week on Thursday we went and picked up a couple pumpkins.

Usually I’m far to lazy to do this type of stuff but the thing is the Kiddo’s best friend T and his brother go every year to get a couple and carve them. Of course that means T’s mom asked us to go and voila, jack-o-lantern motivation :)

I have to admit it was a really good time. The kids ran around like hooligans, I took a dozen great pictures and we came home with two big pumpkins to carve up. The kiddo helped draw the pattern on them and then I did the carving.

The Kiddo is really proud of the finished product, he thinks they are the funniest scary pumpkins because they are “eating eyeballs”. Yeah, that’d be my kiddo.

spirited

The Kiddo has really been into superhero’s lately, the Avengers, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, pretty much every superhero I can think of has been in one of those groups at some point or other. Between that and Transformers his reading lately has been filled with fights to save humanity.

Considering all of that it really came as no surprise when I asked him what he wanted to be for Halloween and he said he wanted to be a superhero. He wanted to be Iron Man, or maybe Wolverine, or maybe… Finally I stopped him and asked why he didn’t just be his own superhero. He gave me an odd look, but I explained that if he had his own superhero team (he does, he calls them the Naturals and has recruited most of his extended family along with a few friends) then he should probably pick his “own” power and name.

He thought about that for a few minutes, and then decided he would be Ghost Man. His power is to turn invisible so that the bad guys can’t seem him or hurt him. He also throws ghost bombs (of course) because you have to have weapons in order to beat the baddies.

So I have no idea what the final costume will look like, I do know it will have a cape though, and the cape will be covered in spirits.

I’ve got the fabric already and hopefully I can get the cape done quickly, I’m starting now so I will be sure to have plenty of time to work on it around my classes. I am thinking that the body suit will just be a blank turtle neck and black sweats, then I can add a little bit of design to them and not spend to much time working on it, we’ll see. Somewhere along the way I also have to figure out a superhero utility belt, with a ghost buckle.

passing through - one holiday down

Well Halloween is finished. It's one of my favorites but not at the top of the list... it would be but society has ruined it quite a bit. This year it was "mandated" that kids do trick-or-treating on Saturday instead of the actual day of Halloween. Let me just say, in the largest understatement of the year, that made me a tad unhappy. Not only did the stupid day switching cause us to not be able to do our usual walk through the mall (where the Kiddo could show off his costume and look at all the other kids showing off theirs) but it also caused this:

That's a lot of rain poring down on our heads. And what is the kiddo saying in that second picture? I asked him if he was having any fun at all and he said no. I asked him if he was a tiny bit happy and he said no. I said not even a little happy? And he said NO, the weather is miserable and I'm not happy. The good news is he wasn't sulking, he was just letting me know that he didn't like the way things were going.

So we gave up on Jordan Commons and headed to grandma's house.
Fortunately the rain had already finished there so the Kiddo was able to hit the neighborhood. He started enjoying himself after house number four, and by house number 8 he was really excited. Everybody thought he was so cute (plus they weren't seeing many younger kids) so they kept giving him extra candy...
When we finished up he had a full bag and a happy face. Grandma fed him a corn dog and rolls and I think he had a good day.

Not your normal school parade

This morning at the Kiddo's school they had a Halloween parade. All the kids that had dressed up were able to be in it. It should have been one of the most fun mornings of the month ...

The Kiddo woke up a little early this morning, lately his usual schedule is medication at 7:30am, up at 8, next meds at 8:30, then breakfast at 9:30. Today he rolled out of bed at 7:30, and I let him stay up because I figured it would be mean to make him go lay in bed thirty more minutes.

He took his meds on schedule, but told me that he thought his head felt hot. I took his temperature and he was right, he was up to 100.6. So I gave him some Tylenol before we bundled him into the car to head to school.

As we stood in the hall outside his classroom waiting for it to be time for them to line up he started acting a little funny. Another kid hit him with a foam sword, the Kiddo came over and started to cry... he doesn't cry about stuff like that, he's a shake it off and breath through it kind of kid so we worried. The Man tried asking him what was wrong but the Kiddo just kept trying to lay his head down on his shoulder. Finally I crouched down to talk to him, I told him he needed to shake it off so he could do the parade. As I talked to him I watched his eyes roll back into his head as he struggled to stay conscious. I gave him a little shake and asked him how he felt. He said fine, but he swayed and started to pass out again. Immediately we realized that he was starting to go into crisis, no idea WHY but at least we knew what to do.. we got him some water, gave him an emergency dose of his AI meds, a package of fruit snacks and had him sit still for the next five minutes or so. He seemed to snap out of it enough that we felt okay leaving him with the teacher to do the parade.
I will admit I worried the whole time. He seemed a little out of it, didn't hear us call him when he walked past us, and didn't really look around any. I felt so bad for him, little guy has been so excited about this the whole week and here he was not able to enjoy it.

We brought him home and sat him down to watch cartoons for the next 45 minutes until it was time to go back for class. I gave him the option of wearing his iron man costume or his toothless costume again and he said now that he was feeling better he really wanted to wear Toothless so the other kids could see him. How could I say no to that? I dressed him up and am keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't get torn or spilled on during the class party.

Toothless

This is Toothless (the dragon, not the boy). He is a Night Fury and one of the main characters in the movie "How to Train Your Dragon". I posted several months ago about our trip to see the movie in the theater. The Kiddo loved it, and we really enjoyed it. Since then he's been on a little bit of a dragon kick and I thought I'd try my hand at making him a Night Fury costume this year.
I finished it this morning, I'm not 100% happy with it but he loves it. I think the wings are too short, and there is supposed to be another set of fins on the tail (up next to the body)... I'm out of black fabric though so if I want to add that second set I'll have to go buy some more.. which would be silly because as is the entire thing cost me less then 10 bucks! Odds are good I'll do it, I hate feeling like something isn't quite right...

Halloween

I wont bore you with ALL the details, (since 90% of you were there *chuckle*) but I will say it was the most fun I've had celebrating Halloween since the Kiddo was born. He is old enough to understand and enjoy trick or treating, he was with nearly all his aunts and uncles and he got to go door to door with his favorite (new) step cousin!!!

We stayed up till midnight, and had maybe one piece of candy. My sisters husband made the best carne asada I've ever eaten, and I got to hang out with my siblings whome I love and miss a lot. Our family has always been close and it feels like we get closer the older we get... It's nice to feel like even though I'm in a different state 99% of the time, that 1% when I'm "home" near my parents and siblings I am still an important part of it all.

I think the kiddo has something to do with that but whatever the reason may be, I'll take it.

Things to come...

Just a little taste of what is to come, (since the Kiddo wont take it off).

wild thing

Nothing puts a crimp in your afternoon like having to take away sesame street privileges from a three year old because he pooped in his drawers... At some point here I'll figure out the why of his potty training issues but until then I suppose it's trial and error on a daily basis. I might have to resort to the dreaded sticker chart, seriously, stickers?? I don't think the joy of getting a sticker ever motivated me to do anything in my life. I mean, gee, woohoo, a little sticky piece of paper that doesn't even STAY sticky.

Yeah he's my little wild thing. Does things his own way in his own time always, since he was born.
He runs rampant about the house all day and apparently has cotton stuffed in his ears so he can't listen when I tell him to behave.
On the plus side he absolutely adores his costume for Halloween this year. He wants to try it on at least once a day and stomps around the house growling.
